Fun Across the Board in Santa Cruz
By MEGAN HARLAN

Where to Stay

The Cliff Crest Inn, 407 Cliff Street, (831) 427-2609, fax (831) 427-2710, on the Web at www.cliffcrestinn.com, is a charming Victorian B & B with five guest rooms, each with private bath. Doubles $195 to $245.

My husband, Matthew, and I spent two nights at the Cliff Crest Inn, a B & B in a robin's-egg-blue Queen Anne-Victorian two blocks from the Boardwalk - just within earshot of hollering ride goers. Located on Beach Hill, which rises right behind the beach, Cliff Crest - with its large portico and balustrades and swooping gables - is typical of the ornate mansions built by Santa Cruz's early logging millionaires.

The watercolors on the walls are by one of the friendly owners, Adriana Gehriger Gil, an artist and longtime resident who, along with her husband, Constantin, bought and refurbished the place last year.

Breakfasts and treats like fresh fruit tarts are served in the pretty solarium, where bay windows look out over the inn's redwood-shaded garden, originally designed by John McLaren, the architect of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
